PEARL CITY — Campbell completed a season sweep of Pearl City with a 25-16, 25-16, 27-25 victory Monday night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I West girls volleyball match.

The Sabers won their third consecutive match and improved to 6-2 in league play. The Chargers dropped to 3-5.

Campbell also defeated Pearl City in straight sets in their earlier meeting this season.

Senior setter Zsiare Lakalo led Campbell with 29 assists, eight digs and three service aces. She also helped the Sabers maintain their composure during a tight third set in which Pearl City pushed Campbell past the 25-point mark.

“I think we just really pulled it together and we really lean on each other,” Lakalo said, who was selected as the Fun Factory ‘VIP of the Game.’

“Even though we made those mistakes, we hang on each other. We know that it’s going to be alright and that we can get the next point no matter what and we always have each other’s backs.”

Outside hitter Kailie Thaler and middle blocker Haylee Scanlon each had nine kills for the Sabers. Opposite Azaiah Amosa added six kills, while Journey Souza and Ryelle Bajet had three apiece.

Amosa helped put Campbell in position to close out the match by setting up match point. Jalen Romero then finished it off for the Sabers.

Pearl City was led by Isabella-Rose Bayani, who had nine kills.

Libero Saydee Vera Cruz had a match-high 22 digs for the Chargers, while Peyton Kamekona and Astynn-Capri Martin each added nine digs.

Lakalo credited Campbell’s preparation for the team’s ability to handle Pearl City’s defense and extended rallies.

“I think we do it in practice enough,” Lakalo said. “We practice for these kind of things and I think the girls really have a bond on and off the court so it helps us stay together even more and this is what we’ve been practicing for so when it comes to game time it’s natural for us to come back.”

Campbell also relied on contributions throughout its lineup.

“Everybody pulls their weight,” Lakalo said. “I think they all did a good job adjusting to my sets as well. I think them being aggressive and knowing where to hit, that’s what we practice. We’re used to it, it’s normal for us.”

The Sabers return to OIA play with their league record now at 6-2, while Pearl City falls to 3-5.
