KAHUKU — Saint Louis open up defense of its state championship with an impressive feat — shutting out Kahuku on its home soil for the first time since 1996.

The Crusaders used a strong defensive performance to pull away from the Red Raiders for a 20-0 win at Carleton E. Weimer Field Saturday night.

“I’m happy for the kids. This is not it, we got a more coming,” said Saint Louis coach Tupu Alualu. “We got a lot of mistakes. We’re going to go back to the drawing board, watch our mistakes and get better.”

Saint Louis allowed just 17 passing yards and had two interceptions against Kahuku, the first of which was a 44-yard pick-six by Urijah Belaras to break a scoreless game with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

Offensively the Crusaders were balanced with a 100-yard rusher in Tenari Fuumatu-Maafala (19 carries, 102 yards) and a 100-yard receiver in Kingston Siliado (13 receptions, 142 yards, 22-yard touchdown).

Quarterback Nainoa Lopes completed 60 percent of his passes for 157 yards and a scoring pass while adding a 2-yard TD run at the end of the fourth quarter.

The Red Raiders will try to bounce back with a home game on Aug. 16 while the Crusaders have a bye week.
