A trio of Hawai’i high school graduates heard their name called during the three-day 2024 MLB Draft that ran from Sunday through Tuesday.

Saint Louis alumnus Caleb Lomavita was the first to receive the good news when he was selected with the final pick on the first day of the draft by the Washington Nationals with pick No. 39 with a competitive balance pick that followed the first round. The draft slot value is worth $2,395,000.

Lomavita, an Ewa Beach native, graduated from Saint Louis in 2021 and was named the 2021 Gatorade State Player of the Year before starring as a catcher for the California Golden Bears. Over 55 games, Lomavita batted .322 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs for the Cal baseball team.

Mid-Pacific alumnus Kodey Shojinaga was the next Hawai’i high school graduate to get picked with pick No. 192 in the sixth round by the Philadelphia Phillies. The draft slot was valued at $310,300.

Shojinaga, a second baseman for the Kansas, was selected as a catcher after a phenomenal two-year career for the Jayhawks. He was solid in his freshman year with .378 batting average while earning Big 12 Co-Freshman of the Year honors. He also earned a second straight second-team All-Big 12 selection and had six four-hit games as a sophomore.

The last Hawai’i high school player to get drafted hails from Maryknoll in class of 2024 graduate Jacob Remily, who was the second player in school history to get drafted and the first who was taken straight out of high school. Remily, a right-handed pitcher, was taken in the 16th-round with pick No. 475 by the Cleveland Guardians.

As a senior with the Spartans, Remily threw 26 strikeouts in 29.1 innings and drove in 10 runs with 13 hits. Remily was the tallest of the trio as well, standing at 6-foot-6.

No Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior was drafted, but a commit to the ‘Bows for the 2024-2025 season was selected in pitcher Christian Rodriguez, who transferred from Cal State Fullerton. Rodriguez was drafted in the 10th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
