HONOLULU – Another week, another cast of HPU Sharks student-athletes and coaches joining Sharks Weekly host Jason Genegabus for an hour to delve into the world of HPU athletics and the people that make up the programs.
Joined first by Hawai’i Pacific Men’s Basketball head coach Darren Vorderbruegge, Genegabus reviewed last season for the Sharks and the challenges they faced in the 2021-22 season.
Coach Vorderbruegge detailed the staff changes the program experience throughout the season and the challenge it was to not only coach and run the men’s collegiate basketball program at HPU, but also take over with the women’s program at the same time.
Coach V and Genegabus then briefly discussed the players on the roster, including some local players starring for the HPU team.

Following the first break (10:58), Genegabus and Coach V were joined by returning senior forward Trey Miller and transfer forwards Jalen Chandler and Marquis Moore and discussed their Halloween costume ideas to open the segment.
The players then discuss how the team bonds during the offseason and the transfer forwards explained the things that they have found the best and most different in their time in Hawai’i.
The segment closes with some discussion about the upcoming preseason scrimmages for the Sharks and the difficulties of scheduling home exhibition matches due to travel.
Coming back from the second break (23:25), Genegabus discussed with Coach V and the trio of forwards their favorite sandwiches and the process involved with adding transfer players and the focus and commitment to academics for the team.
The conversation then moves to the traveling involved with being an athlete and a team at Hawai’i Pacific, both among the islands and heading back to the mainland. Coach V details the challenges of long road trips and the positive takeaways from away games.
In the final segment of this week’s episode of Sharks Weekly (35:37), the players disclose what video games they would go one-on-one with each other in and the one thing they would pick to have an unlimited amount of for the rest of their lives.
Genegabus and the men’s basketball conglomerate closed the show with a quick discussion on the upcoming schedule and if there was a particular team they were looking forward to getting a chance to compete against this season.
