Moanalua Tops Kalani 5-1 Behind Sato’s All-Around Effort, Takes Over First in OIA East

Moanalua continued its strong run through OIA Division I East play on Saturday, knocking off Kalani 5-1 to move into sole possession of first place.

Nā Menehune set the tone early, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first inning behind timely hitting from Alia Anzai, Koiau Ledward, and Ava Atagi. That early cushion proved to be more than enough for a Moanalua pitching staff that delivered one of its most complete performances of the season.

Fun Factory VIP of the Game Kaylah Sato played a major role on both sides. In the circle, she tossed a season-high four innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out three. At the plate and on the bases, Sato added two runs scored — including Moanalua’s insurance run in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.

Jolie Mochizuki closed things out in dominant fashion, earning the save with three scoreless innings in relief. It marked a strong bounce-back outing after a tough previous appearance against Kalani earlier this season.

Kalani’s Naomi Stremick kept the Falcons within striking distance, but only two of the five runs she allowed were earned.

With the win, Moanalua improves to 8-1 in league play and now sits atop the OIA D1 East standings, while Kalani drops to 6-2.
