One year after falling short in the state final, the University Lab Jr. Bows outlasted Le Jardin in five sets to win their first-ever state title in the New City Nissan Division II Boys Volleyball Championships at the Neal Blaisdell Center Saturday night.

Koa Laboy finished with 40 kills and Micah Nakasato added 26 in the 25-22, 25-27, 27-25, 25-27, 15-12 victory as University capped an undefeated 14-0 season.

“It means everything,” said Nakasato. “Since middle school, I’ve always dreamed of winning a state championship for our school and to be the first one, it’s an honor and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”

Laboy was named the tournament’s most outstanding player as he hit .235 on the match on 98 swings while tallying 21 digs and three service aces.

“It feels great to make history,” said Laboy. “I’m so glad to execute and get it done.”
